linen white egret wades in the Han River

linen white egret wades in the Han River
downstream does it see what i see?
box turtle sunning itself on a rock midstream
the egret's not in its dream
flew over it low, didn't say hello
pokes it's long-necked beak between boulders
turtle hasn't moved a muscle
but now extends a rear left leg
egret runs out of nooks to peck
wades back out into the glassy water
i see two bodies in reflection
connected by its pencil thin legs
turtle on its rock mid-dream
shifting direction slightly toward the egret
one front leg out ready to push off
as small black sparrows swoop low
as the egret hops up upon the shore
looks left and right
and takes flight across the Han
as a gray egret with belly black alights
the white egret dances before it
pencil tips trace the softy sand bar
turtle still on rock sunning
as swallows swoop and rise
Han flows on gurgling song
all is right
nothing's wrong
moving downward through Taichung
pooling up for flood gate waterfalls
patient worthy turtle companion
we meet again
Abraham
