Something in Your Way (sung to the Nirvana song)

there's something in your way, yeah, mmm-mmm
i'm something in the way, yeah, mmm-mmm

there's a cardboard jungle
where the bike spot used to be
with potted plants and a cut-out cheetah
from Serenget-Disney

 here on  a safari hunt
an oasis where to teach
but bikes need chains from monkeys
and classrooms out of reach

there's something in my way, yeah, mmm-mmm
you're something in my way, yeah, mmm-mmm

went out bike-space hunting
with my elephanting gun
heard chimpanzees calling
to see what they had done

they'd taken children's outer space
for this alien's land rover
the bosses' gaffe which made me laugh
 chained to a Transformer

something's in your way, yeah, mmm-mmm
i'm something in your way, yeah, mmm-mmm

selfish germ pandemic
acting like the kids they take
not a thought for teacher
just a belly-ache

meat has got no feelings
domestic or imported
the law is of the jungle
ivory is hoarded

there's something in your way, yeah, mmm-mmm
you're something in my way, yeah, mmm-mmm
somethings i can't say, yeah, mmm-mmm
just something in way

A Lover's Ten Percent

we hear about one percent affluence
estute Graeber's occupation
but quiver in love's shadow
a lover's ten percent of doubt
if what should be will not work out
and romance become a roundabout

we sneer at loans made just to bind us
to make us bow like slaves to patrons
but wonder how a maid's mind moves
how her mouth tongue lips and teeth
can kiss your pride with merriment
or suck you till your blood is spent

we buy lay-away plans on credit
benefitting only interested parties
but here folk drive by countyside rules
the shortest route to A-B distance
you'd be a fool to close your eyes
and test the branch's resistance

once one's bitten he's twice shy
they'll say he was a real nice guy
Durocher knows they'll finish last
after all the love they had has passed
so why not make a lovers pact
'when all is done, give it back'

it's beneficiary children's wont to say
'save your parents' rainy day'
mountains soon to valleys yield
letting justice be appealed
make it clear just what you might
and print it out in black and white

don't spend your ashes on an urn
let love grow and money burn
trust not future to a chance
lock it up, then dance the dance
ten percent is not too bad
with ninety reasons to be glad!

drizzling indecision

drizzling indecision
even the cat's confused
the roof is wet
but bikers ride
construction workers work
on a roof a block away
but the cat doesn't want to go out
to get his paws wet

I Remember Why I Came Here

i remember why i came here
ride bike down country trails
not to buy something for sale
i have my favorite spots to ride
because i haven't worn them out
so infrequently i come here
a room has just four corners
i paint myself into one
with a wide wide world without
my cellmate isn't jealous
she's happy staying in
i ride outside like an alley cat
i want out like an alley cat
the food brings me back
the litter box
the food
the litterbox
the food
the litterbox
the great outdoors...

Oh, to taste every word

oh, to taste every word
deliberate sounds from Hardy's lips
each letter of every delicious syllable
every loving chew
of every curving 'e' in Eustasia and Wildeve.

for all the noise of careless motormen
there sits one rider waiting for his lover
under a sheltered Han River bench
as the wind kicks up from north
dry as a drizzle spreads around them

more than glad am i to fold this paper
into my father's Hardy pages
pen retracted, kick-stand kicked
to find dry bench on Han River ledge
closer, warmer to my own lover
